Dr. Alan A. Godlas
Dr. Godlas is an Associate Professor of Islamic Studies in the Department of Religion at the University of Georgia. He holds a BS in Ecological Psychology from the University of California, Davis and an MA and PhD in Near Eastern Studies, specializing in Islamic Studies, from the University of California, Berkeley. In 1974 in California, he met Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh, who introduced him to the path of Shah Ni'matullah. He then journeyed to Iran, where he studied Persian language and literature at the University of Tehran. He returned in 1977 and began studying Persian, Arabic, and Turkish in Berkeley under the guidance of Professor Hamid Algar. He has also studied and done research in Cairo, Istanbul, Morocco, and Uzbekistan. He has translated Shah Ni'matullah's Commentary on the Lama'at; and the focus of his work is a translation and edition of Ruzbihan Baqli's Sufi Commentary on the Qur'an. In 2002, Dr. Godlas' website (Islam and Islamic Studies www.uga.edu/islam ) was one of five websites in the category of spirituality (among which was the Vatican's site) that were nominated for a Webby award (which are the equivalent of the Oscars for websites).
